Qatar has signed a series of deals to build a $3.8bn desalination and power plant part-owned by Japanese and French firms, a statement said.

Georgia nuclear plant could cost $6,300/kW
Georgia Power said it could cost $6,300/kW to build 2,200 MW of new nuclear capacity at the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant near Waynesboro, Ga. The estimate came as the utility moves toward submitting a nuclear self-build proposal to Georgia regulators.

Group wins 954 MW Canadian wind power order
The St-Laurent Énergies consortium, which includes German wind turbine maker REpower Systems AG, has been awarded five wind projects by Hydro-Quebec Distribution representing a total capacity of 954 MW in the Canadian province of Québec.

DOE advances restructured clean coal FutureGen venture
The Department of Energy released a draft funding opportunity announcement to solicit public input on the demonstration of multiple commercial-scale IGCC or other clean coal power plants with cutting-edge carbon capture and storage technology under the Department's restructured FutureGen approach. The draft solicitation outlines the planned scope of the project, evaluation criteria, terms and conditions and cost sharing requirements for public-private cooperation under FutureGen.

European Investment Bank finances Italy-Sardinia sub-sea power link
The European Investment Bank is advancing a &eur;300m ($464m) loan to Terna, which is responsible in Italy for electricity transmission and dispatching over the high-voltage and extra-high voltage grid - to help finance a new submarine high-voltage power cable between the Italian mainland and Sardinia.

Foster Wheeler to supply waste heat recovery units for Thai plant
Foster Wheeler has announced that its UK-headquartered subsidiary, Foster Wheeler Energy Limited, has been awarded an engineering and materials supply contract by Samsung Engineering for two gas turbine exhaust waste heat recovery units for PTT Public (PTT) ethane separation plant at Map Ta Phut Industrial Complex in Thailand.

GE installs new steam turbine technology
GE Energy said that it installed its new 26.8 inch last stage bucket with axial entry dovetail at the Coal Creek Station in North Dakota.
