Protest continues at UK power plant following arrests
Campaigners opposed to the building of Britain's first coal fired power plant in over 30 years were continuing their week-long protest Tuesday at Kingsnorth power station in Kent, south east England, following the arrest of nine demonstrators.

National Grid outlines plans for £10bn network upgrade
National Grid has released fresh details about how it intends to support the 35 GW of renewable energy that is expected to come online by 2020, outlining plans for a £10bn ($19.6bn) overhaul of the UK's transmission and distribution networks, reports Business Green.

Progress Energy Florida files nuclear plant application with NRC
Progress Energy Florida said it submitted a combined operating license application with the NRC to construct a new nuclear power plant in Florida. The application, submitted to the NRC July 30, included the request to build two Westinghouse AP1000 advanced 1,100 MW nuclear reactors at the site.

EPA grants air permit for Desert Rock Energy Project
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued its approval for the final air permit for the Desert Rock Energy Project in New Mexico. The air permit will enable construction on the $3 billion, 1,500 MW ($2,000/kW) coal power plant.

New capacity of European power plant to total 185 GW by 2030
The total capacity of new power plants installed in Europe, including Turkey and Russia, will reach 185 GW, German research institute Trendresearch said in its July report, reports Platts.
