Italian solar incentive accounts for 100 MW
The Italian government-backed incentive to encourage the generation of solar power has reached an established capacity of 100 MW, according to Gestore dei Servizi Elettrici.

National Grid wants to slash emissions 80 per cent by 2050
National Grid raised its greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal from 60 percent to 80 per cent by 2050, the company has announced.

Iceland-Yemen geothermal electricity agreement signed
Yemen's General Corporation for Electricity and Iceland's Reykjavik Energy Invest (REI) company have signed an agreement on geothermal electricity generation, according to reports by Saba, Yemen's news agency.

EU mulls fast-tracking of CCS demonstration projects
The European Union is mulling an acceleration of efforts to capture and store CO2 by fast-tracking proposals for around 12 demonstration projects, reported Reuters.

Xcel seeks power uprate on nuclear reactors
Xcel Energy asked the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to extend its current 40-year operating licenses for the Prairie Island site to 60 years. Xcel is also submitting a request to increase the power generation of each reactor by 80 MW, bringing the two reactor's total capacity to 1,240 MW.

DOE to loan $38.5 billion for emissions reduction
U.S. Department of Energy plans to issue loan guarantees in two stages this summer for up to $38.5 billion for projects that use advanced technologies that avoid, reduce or sequester emissions of air pollutants and greenhouse gases.

EPA says CO2 emissions declined in 2006
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has released the national greenhouse gas inventory, "Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks: 1990-2006," which found that overall emissions during 2006 decreased by 1.1 percent from the previous year.

AREVA & MHI expand their cooperation into the nuclear fuel arena
AREVA of France, a leader in the nuclear energy field, and Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Limited (MHI), a major player in the global nuclear industry, have decided to extend their cooperation into the new area of nuclear fuel.

Australia's New South Wales considering IPO for power assets
Australia's New South Wales state said that offloading electricity assets through an initial public offering is "attractive" and will be considered.

Brazil's Vale plans to invest $2.1bn in power projects by 2011
Brazilian mining giant Companhia Vale do Rio Doce SA, or Vale, plans to invest $2.1bn in projects to generate electricity by 2011.
