Italy to reverse policy and build nuclear power stations: minister
The Italian government said Thursday it would begin building nuclear power stations, reversing a 20-year ban in an initiative likely to spark strong resistance and take a long time to come to fruition.

Global carbon market worth €2 trillion by 2020: Point Carbon
With the introduction of a greenhouse gas cap-and-trade scheme in the US, global carbon markets could be worth almost €2 trillion ($3.15 trillion), with total transaction volume forecast at 38bn tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent per year by 2020, according to environmental market analysts Point Carbon.

Gazprom warns EU over energy sector unbundling
Russian gas export monopoly Gazprom has warned the European Union that Europe will be endangering its energy security by breaking up the continent's energy conglomerates, according to the International Herald Tribune.

DOE says 20 percent wind power achievable
The U.S. Department of Energy said that using wind power to generate 20 percent of the nation's electricity is achievable, and that by accelerating the growth of wind power, the nation's use of natural gas could be reduced by 11 percent and use of coal by 18 percent annually.

Power giants 'stitch up' UK customers: watchdog
Power companies have been accused of operating a 'stitch-up' that means UK gas and electricity prices are rising at the fastest rate in Europe.

UK wind projects mired in pre-approval stage, face extended delays
New wind energy projects in the UK are mired in pre-approval delays, with at least 222 new projects awaiting sanction, even though the UK government has promised to speed up the process of inquiry and approval, according to the Guardian.

Exelon to cooperate with French on nuclear power
Electricite de France (EdF) and Exelon have signed a 5-year agreement to cooperate on nuclear power matters. The memorandum of understanding covers managerial and technical matters such as outage management, fuel operations and equipment reliability. It excludes any new build effort.

E.ON seeks German government help in bundling transmission grids
German utility group E.ON is appealing to the German government to bundle ultra-high voltage power transmission grids into a unified system, according to the Financial Times, which quoted the group's CEO, Wulf Bernotat.

Gazprom registers to trade on Nord Pool
Russian gas monopoly Gazprom has registered to trade carbon products on the Nordic power exchange, Nord Pool, according to Reuters.

Ontario coal plants told to cut emissions
A directive issued by the Ontario government ordered Ontario Power Generation to cut coal emission levels to two-thirds below 2003 levels by 2011. Energy Minister Gerry Phillips said emissions of greenhouse gases from the coal plants must be 11.5 megatonnes in 2011, down from 34.5 megatonnes in 2003.
