Japan rejects raising British hedge fund's stake in electricity wholesaler
An advisory panel to the Japanese government has rejected the proposal from The Children's Investment Fund, a UK-based hedge fund, to raise its stake in a major electricity company, citing risks to public order.

Iberdrola Renovables establishes clean energy joint venture
Renewable energy major Iberdrola Renovables and the Caja Rural de Aragon (Cajalon) bank have agreed to form a joint venture to develop clean energy installations in the Aragon region of northeastern Spain.

Maxim pays $311/kW for New England combined cycle plant
Maxim Power Corp. of Calgary is buying the Pittsfield Generating Co. and its 170 MW power plant in Pittsfield, Mass. from affiliates of GE Energy Financial Services for $52.9 million, or $311/kW.

Swedish power giant may join race for British Energy
Vattenfall, Sweden's state-owned utility, is said to be interested in joining the race for British Energy and has appointed investment bank Citigroup to look into the benefits of a possible bid, according to yesterday's Telegraph.

Virginia regulators deny coal power plant proposal
Virginia regulators denied a request from Appalachian Power Co.(APCo) to build a $2.23 billion, 629 MW coal-fired power plant in West Virginia that would use IGCC technology. Regulators also denied APCo's request for a rate increase to begin recovering construction costs for the new plant from its Virginia customers.

Egyptian boost for Enel energy
Enel, the Italian electricity company, has signed a deal with Egypt's national energy company to take stakes in gas fields and a liquefaction plant, in a bid to ease concerns about a looming crisis in Italy's energy market, reports the FT.

RWE offers £11bn in cash for British Energy
RWE, the German utility company, has made an indicative all-cash offer of close to 700p ($13.82) a share for British Energy, in a deal that could value the UK's nuclear operator at up to $21.7bn.

GE-Hitachi won't bid for Ontario nuclear reactor
GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy Inc. has informed the Ontario government that it will not be bidding on construction of a new nuclear power plant in the province, according to a report in the Toronto Star newspaper.

UK energy regulator launches probe into Scottish suppliers
Ofgem, the UK energy regulator has launched an investigation into Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) and Scottish Power following a complaint alleging abuse of dominant market positions reports the Financial Times.

FPL seeks OK for 1,200 MW natural gas power plant
Florida Power & Light Co. asked Florida regulators for approval to build a 1,219 MW combined cycle natural gas-fired power plant at the company's West County Energy Center in Palm Beach County, where two units are already under construction.
