Ultra in talks with British Energy about reactor control systems
Ultra Electronics has begun talks with British Energy to secure a potentially lucrative foothold in the civil nuclear energy market, according to the FT.

AEP sells four inactive natural gas and oil plant sites
American Electric Power has sold four inactive generating plants owned by its AEP Texas North Generation Company LLC subsidiary to Eagle Construction and Environmental Services, LP. The plants, which have not operated since 2004 or earlier, had a total generating capacity of 656 MW and had produced electricity from natural gas or oil.

Suez and Gaz De France jointly acquire Europe's largest CCGT plant
Gaz de France and SUEZ have together acquired an 1875 MW CCGT power plant located in Teesside, northeast England, Europe's largest such plant.

The deadline for bids to save Libya's loss-making state utility company Electricite du Liban (EdL) has been delayed by two months amid continuing political instability.

British Energy has denied a report it is planning a £5.5bn ($10.8bn) break-up involving the creation of a new company to focus on building a new fleet of nuclear reactors.

Talk of exporting coal to the Pacific on the rise
15 February 2008 -- With the world coal market roiled by supply problems, there is increasing talk of exporting U.S. western coal into the Pacific Basin, Reuters reported. Peabody Energy Corp, acknowledged in its fourth quarter performance conference call considering exports to Asia from the West Coast.

Record-setting solar-to-grid conversion efficiency
Sandia National Laboratories and Stirling Energy Systems set a new solar-to-grid system conversion efficiency record by achieving a 31.25 percent net efficiency rate. The old 1984 record of 29.4 percent was surpassed January 31 on SES's "Serial #3" solar dish Stirling system at Sandia's National Solar Thermal Test Facility.

Bulgaria will pool its main energy assets into a single company in a move to boost its position on the regional and European energy markets.

Nine Mile Point is site for new nuclear reactor license bid
UniStar Nuclear Energy has told the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission it plans to submit a Combined License (COL) application in late 2008 for a potential advanced design, 1,600 MW nuclear reactor at Constellation's Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station in upstate New York.
