TVA plans 600 MW natural gas plant
URS Corp. said it has been awarded a $180 million contract to help the Tennessee Valley Authority design, build or renovate both combined-cycle and simple-cycle gas plants. The first project under the 30-month contract is to design and build a 600 MW combined-cycle natural gas-fired power plant next to TVA's existing Lagoon Creek turbine plant in Haywood County, Tenn. The plant is scheduled to begin operation in 2010.

China's first carbon capture & storage plant to be operational by 2009
China's first coal-fired power station employing carbon capture and storage is planned to begin operations in 2009, under a joint venture partnership, GreenGen, between a group of state-owned enterprises and American firm Peabody Energy.

Doosan to build $261.7m Libyan gas fired plant
South Korea's Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co will build a $261.7m power plant for General Electricity Company of Libya, its second order from the country in December.

PPC discloses details of planned MoU with RWE
Greek electricity utility Public Power Corporation has specified the major areas of consideration in its planned memorandum of understanding with German utility major RWE, according to Thomson Financial, which cited an official company release.

RWE Power and GE to develop new power storage system
RWE Power has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GE for the joint development and validation of a zero-emission storage technology (Advanced Adiabatic Compressed Air Energy Storage -AA-CAES) with higher efficiency than current available solutions.

585 MW of renewable power greenlighted for PG&E
Pacific Gas and Electric Co. said the California Public Utilities Commission has approved three utility-scale solar and one geothermal contract that will generate 585.5 MW of electricity.

Siemens books order for 200 MW offshore wind farm
Siemens Power Generation signed a contract with Danish energy company Dong Energy A/S to supply 91 wind turbines to extend the existing Horns Rev offshore wind farm in the North Sea off the Danish coast. With a total capacity of more than 200 MW, this is the largest order Siemens has ever received for offshore wind turbines.

Ireland-Wales subsea power link closer
Ambitious plans to link Ireland's electricity network with Wales in the United Kingdom could come to life early in 2008, it has been revealed.
