Solar power plant opens in Portugal
GE Energy Financial Services, PowerLight (a unit of SunPower Corp.) and Catavento formally dedicated an 11 MW solar power plant in Portugal's Alentejo region in the town of Serpa, 200 kilometers (124 miles) southeast of Lisbon.

Hydroelectric plant workers have rescued a man from an ice floe in the Niagara River around one kilometer from the brink of Niagara Falls.

TBF Thompson takes over Deutz Engines distribution for Ireland
TBF Thompson (Plant) Ltd has acquired the distribution business of Deutz Engines Ireland Ltd, while confirming a distribution agreement with Deutz AG for the company's range of compact diesel engines in the Republic of Ireland.

Moody's blue on TXU acquisition
Moody's Investors Service said in a report that TXU Corp.'s proposed acquisition by a group of private equity investors will likely lead to a "period of aggressive financing" that could make the power provider a "deeply speculative-grade rated company."

NRC authorizes early site permit for Grand Gulf site
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission authorized an early site permit (ESP) to System Energy Resources Inc., a unit of Entergy Corp., for the Grand Gulf ESP site near Port Gibson, Miss.

Keewatin Windpower to acquire Canadian wind firm
Keewatin Windpower Corp. has entered into an agreement with Sky Harvest Windpower Corp., a private Canadian company, which will see Keewatin acquire all of Sky Harvest's issued and outstanding share capital.

Horizon Wind to be sold for $2.15bn
Bloomberg reports that EDP-Energias de Portugal SA, the country's biggest electricity utility, agreed to buy Horizon Wind Energy LLC of Texas from Goldman Sachs Group Inc. for $2.15 billion. The purchase will more than double EDP's wind-power production.

Japan will provide a soft loan of $22m to help Cambodia implement its Greater Mekong Power Network development project.
