Abu Dhabi to establish first photovoltaic panel manufacturer
Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Adfec) is to set up a company to manufacture photovoltaic (PV) or solar panels to serve the emirate. It would be one of the first local companies in the Gulf region to produce materials needed for solar power generation.

Russia to build new power units for nuclear plants
In a news conference held in St Petersburg late last week, Igor Konyshev, adviser to the head of Russia's atomic energy agency, said that a fast neutron BN-800 reactor will be built for the Beloyarsk nuclear power plant by 2012.

80-MW solar project proposed for California
Kings River Conservation District and Cleantech America LLC have entered into a multi-year agreement for Cleantech America to provide up to 80 MW of utility scale, peak solar power to the recently formed San Joaquin Valley Power Authority.

E.ON backs expansion of European emissions trading to spur investment
A leading European utility has called for an expansion to the carbon trading market, as a route to tackling climate change. Wulf H. Bernotat, CEO of Germany's E.ON says that emission trading is the most effective way of giving companies incentives to invest in new low carbon technologies and says that his firm plans to invest €60bn ($83bn) over the next four years.

Vattenfall ups investment in Swedish wave power research
Vattenfall is investing a total of SEK13m ($19.4m) in a project at the Uppsala University in Sweden to develop wave power technology. The project aims to study and evaluate the generation of energy from the motion of sea waves at a research installation in Skagerak on the west coast of Sweden.

AGL takes ownership of Torrens Island power station
Australian utility AGL Energy has increased its power generation capacity by more than 60 per cent, after formally taking ownership of the 1280 MW gas fired Torrens Island power station in South Australia from TRUenergy yesterday.

Germany to draft ambitious energy strategy despite economic concerns
Following her third and last National Energy Summit with business, consumer and research representatives, Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, yesterday said her government would draft an energy strategy by the end of August. This is despite warnings from business about the potential damage Germany's ambitious climate goals could inflict on its economy, says a report in the Financial Times.

First U.S. EPR steel forging ready for fabrication
AREVA Inc. announced that the first quality-approved forging for the steam generator tube sheet for its U.S. Evolutionary Power Reactor (EPR) arrived at AREVA's fabrication facility in Chalon, France.
