German regional utilities to merge into national player: report
Several German regional energy companies in the Ruhr area are planning to merge into one big national player by 2009, according to regional newspaper Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ).

Bangladesh to install seven rental power plants
Bangladesh has decided to install seven rental power plants to check its acute power crisis with the power ministry recommending three foreign and local companies to add 250 MW electricity to the national grid.

Bahrain Ministry to hand over electricity and water role
Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa has issued a decree to create a body responsible for power and water in the kingdom that will assume the powers and responsibilities currently held by the Ministry of Electricity and Water.

Philippines Transco sold
The group of Monte Oro Grid Resources Corp. and China's State Grid Corp. submitted the highest bid of $3.95bn at an auction Wednesday for a 25-year concession to operate National Transmission Corp (Transco) the Philippines nation's power grid, the government said.

UK approves major offshore wind push
The British Government has approved thousands of offshore wind turbines. Cabinet minister and business secretary John Hutton said today that he wants offshore windmills to power all British homes by the year 2020 and in order to achieve this the British coastline will be opened up to thousands more of the massive wind turbines.

Scientists issue Bali climate change warning
More than 200 leading climate scientists have warned the United Nations Climate Conference of the need to act immediately to cut greenhouse gas emissions, with a window of only 10-15 years for global emissions to peak and decline, and a goal of at least a 50 percent reduction by 2050.

Kentucky advanced-coal project obtains air permit
The Kentucky Division for Air Quality issued an air permit for the 630-MW Cash Creek IGCC plant planned for Henderson County, Kentucky.

Bruce Power looks to Alberta nuclear plant
Bruce Power LP, Canada's only private operator of a nuclear power plant, said the acquisition of a would-be nuclear firm in Alberta gives it a six- to nine-month head start on planning for the first commercial reactors in the province. Duncan Hawthorne, chief executive, said the company was considering building a C$6 billion ($6 billion), 2,000 MEW twin-reactor complex in northern Alberta as it agreed to acquire Energy Alberta Corp. last week.

G8 workshop backs carbon capture and storage technology
The start of a clean energy revolution is one step closer following the conclusion of a series of G8 workshops in Calgary, Canada today, according to coal industry associations World Coal Institute, the Carbon Capture and Storage Association and the Australian Coal Association.
