First firing of Siemens SGT5-8000H, the world's largest and most powerful gas turbine, was achieved as scheduled on December 20, 2007. This marks the beginning of a planned 18-month trial operation period at the E.ON Irsching 4 power plant near Ingolstadt.

NorthWestern Energy foresees no new baseload
NorthWestern Energy said it plans to double its wind power capacity over the next seven years but expects no new coal plant construction due to uncertainty over global warming.

PPL to pursue a third Susquehanna nuclear unit
A unit of PPL Corp. will ask the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to approve a combined license to construct and operate a new generating unit near the Susquehanna nuclear power plant near Berwick, Pa. PPL contracted with an affiliate of UniStar Nuclear Energy, a joint venture of Constellation Energy and EDF, to prepare the application, which will be based on AREVA's U.S. Evolutionary Power Reactor design.

Exelon Nuclear selects Texas site for possible plant
Exelon Nuclear has selected Victoria County in southeast Texas as its site for a federal license application that would allow construction and operation of a new nuclear plant should the company decide to build one. The company expects to submit the combined construction and operating license application (COL) to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in September 2008.

Illinois wins FutureGen
The FutureGen Alliance has selected Mattoon, Ill. as the site for the experimental $1.8 billion coal-fired plant whose aim is to produce zero emissions.

Siemens and the Technical University of Aachen (RWTH) to cooperate in wind energy research
Siemens Power Generation (PG) and the Technical University of Aachen (RWTH) are to cooperate in the further development of key components for wind turbines.
