Fuel cell to run on paint fumes
FuelCell Energy, Inc. said that Ford Motor Co. will buy a fuel cell for its Oakville, Ontario, facility to reduce paint solvent coming from automotive painting operations by turning fumes from those compounds into 300 kW of electricity.

EPA proposes air permit changes
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said it is proposing changes to air quality permitting rules to encourage pollution prevention; provide increased flexibility, enable industrial facilities to make rapid changes to respond to market demands; save resources for state permitting authorities, and improve public information.

Costa Rica hopes by 2021 to become the first country in the world with zero net emissions of carbon dioxide, as this small Central American nation confronts the threat posed by global warming to its vital tourism and agriculture sectors.

NRG to cut emissions at Indian River plant
The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control said it reached a preliminary agreement with NRG Energy to cut annual emissions of sulfur dioxide by an estimated 4,300 tons, nitrogen oxides by an estimated 2,900 tons and mercury by an estimated 1,200 ounces at the company's Indian River power plant by January 2012.

China on track to hit its 2007 target for closing down small thermal plants
China has shut down small thermal power plants with an installed capacity totaling 6.95m kW in the first half of the year, which represents close to 70 per cent of its 2007 pre-set goal, reports the Asia Pulse news service.

EPRI study advocates 'full portfolio' of technology to address carbon
The Electric Power Research Institute released a study showing that the "aggressive development and implementation" of a "full portfolio" of advanced electricity technologies could reduce the economic cost of cutting future U.S. CO2 emissions by more than 50 percent while meeting the continuing growth in demand for electricity.

BP and Powerspan to demo carbon capture technology
BP Alternative Energy and Powerspan Corp. have agreed to develop and commercialize Powerspan's carbon dioxide (CO2) capture technology, called "ECO2," for power plants.

UK government launches metering and billing consultation
As the UK government launched its consultation on metering and billing, the country's energy minister, Malcolm Wicks, stated that smart meters in every home and business will play a key part in reducing the UK's carbon footprint and cutting energy bills.

Wind power generation could save consumers €2 bn ($2.73 bn) in 2007, according to the German wind energy association BWE.

PG&E to use "dry cooling" technology
Pacific Gas and Electric Co. received permission from the California Energy Commission to employ "dry cooling" technology at its Gateway Generating Station (Gateway) currently under construction near Antioch.
