UK Government gives £170m boost to low-carbon energy technologies
Yesterday the UK government announced that is to give an additional £170m ($348m) to the cross-Government Environmental Transformation Fund (ETF), which means that its investment in the commercialization of low-carbon technologies in the UK will exceed £370m over the next three years.

AEP settles NSR case
American Electric Power reached a settlement agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, eight states and 14 environmental organizations, bringing an end to almost eight years of litigation regarding alleged violations of the New Source Review provisions of the Clean Air Act.

Bonanza coal plant wins EPA permit
The U.S. EPA approved a permit to add a new unit to the coal-fired Bonanza electric plant in Utah. The permit is among the first decisions of its type for the EPA since a Supreme Court ruling last winter that said the agency had the authority to limit carbon dioxide. In approving the Bonanza application, EPA required no curbs on carbon dioxide.

EU's 2020 twenty per cent emission reduction target to cost €16 bn
Point Carbon estimates that meeting the 20 per cent emissions reduction target in 2020 will cost around €16bn ($22.32bn), rising to €43bn with a 30 per cent target.

Ameren coal plant recognized for low NOX emissions
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently listed Units 1 and 2 at AmerenEnergy Generating's Newton Power Station as the second and third lowest emitters of nitrogen oxide (NOX) among all U.S. coal fired plants operating without selective catalytic reduction NOX removal equipment.

Coal-fired power plant to offset CO2 emissions
Seven regional utilities that propose building a $1.6 billion coal-fired power plant on the South Dakota border have agreed to offset the CO2 emissions of the plant's Minnesota customers.

EU-15 2005 greenhouse gas emissions down 0.8 per cent
Greenhouse gas emissions from the 15 pre-2004 European Union member states fell by 35.2m tonnes of CO2 equivalent, or 0.8 per cent, between 2004 and 2005, according to a report issued by the European Environment Agency.

Westar to spend $465 million on coal plant improvements
Westar Energy, Inc. plans to spend $465 million to reduce regulated emissions from its coal-fired Jeffrey Energy Center, the largest of its 12 power stations. The environmental project and others outlined in a proposed agreement filed with the Kansas Department of Health and the Environment are aimed at meeting requirements of the Clean Air Visibility Rule.
