Work starts on new Korean reactors
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. said today that it had begun work on two new commercial nuclear reactors being built on the outskirts of Gyeongju, a city about 371 km southeast of Seoul.

VA Tech to refurbish Bulgarian hydropower plant
VA Tech Hydro has signed a contract with Natsionalna Elektricheska Kompania EAD (NEK) for the refurbishment of the Dolna Arda hydropower plant cascade in Bulgaria.

ScottishPower get go-ahead for Europe's biggest windfarm
ScottishPower was today granted final planning consent for Europe‚s largest on-shore windfarm, the 322 MW Whitelee project south of Glasgow. It will provide enough green energy to power 200 00 homes, roughly equivalent to the city's demand.

GE and Powerlight plan world's biggest solar power plant in Portugal
GE Energy Financial Services, PowerLight Corporation and Catavento Lda announced today that they would build the world's largest solar photovoltaic power project. The 11 MW solar power plant, comprising 52 000 photovoltaic modules, will be built at a single site in Serpa, Portugal, 200 km (124 miles) southeast of Lisbon in one of Europe's sunniest areas.

Work starts on Idaho geothermal plant
Ormat Technologies is to begin constructing the first phase of the Raft River geothermal power plant in Idaho, US, after the plant's developer, US Geothermal Inc. announced it expected to secure project financing within the next two months.

JBIC loans India funds for 900 MW pumped storage power plant
The Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) has signed loan agreements totalling ¥66 950m ($582.4m) with the Indian government and the Rural Electrification Corporation Ltd for pumped storage power generation, water supply and rural electrification projects in India.

Globeleq to add generation capacity in Peru
Globeleq announced that it has issued notice to begin construction of the first unit of the two-unit, 336 MW Kallpa power plant near Lima, Peru. The new, natural gas-fired generator will help meet the rapidly rising demand for electric power in Peru.

Aggreko to supply Kenya with 100 MW of temporary power
Aggreko has won a contract with Kenya Electricity Generating Company Ltd (KenGen) for the provision of 100 MW temporary power in Kenya to support the national grid and ensure uninterrupted power for industry.

Competitive Chinese to build coal fired plants for Indonesia
Indonesian Energy and Mieral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro has announced that three Chinese firms have agreed to build coal fired power plants with a total capacity of 8000 MW.

Federal, state, and local officials dedicated the first new major LA Basin power plant built in the past 30 years, SCE's 1,054 MW Mountainview generating facility in Redlands, Calif.
