Wave power connected to Italian grid
Electricity generated from waves has been transmitted to a national electricity grid for the first time anywhere in the world, according to the developers of a project in Sicily, Italy.

BNFL get OK for British Nuclear Group privatization
BNFL, formally British Nuclear Fuels Limited, has today gained Government approval to sell its specialist nuclear clean-up business, British Nuclear Group. The announcement coincided with news that the cost of cleaning up the UK's nuclear power plants could be more than £70bn ($121.5bn), according to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. The authority's previous estimate of the cost had been £56bn.

UK pushes microgeneration
The UK Government yesterday launched a strategy to increase local level energy production and reduce carbon emissions. News of the strategy came in the same week that the government accepted that it was unlikely to meet its target of reducing CO2 emissions by 20 per cent by 2010.

Load shedding prompts protests in Pakistan
Severe load shedding overnight brought several hundred people onto the streets in Dhaka, Pakistan to protest yesterday. The protesters then surrounded and ransacked the office of the Power Development Board (PDB).
