Enron's Lay, Skilling found guilty
Enron Corp. former Chairman Ken Lay and former Chief Executive Jeffrey Skilling were found guilty of lying about the company's financial troubles.

EU, US sign nuclear fusion reactor pact
The European Union, the United States, and five other nations signed an agreement Wednesday to build the first nuclear- fusion reactor. The aim of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, ITER, is to provide a new, safe energy source that will cut oil demand and curb greenhouse-gas emissions.

Austria blocks Verbund OMV deal
The Austrian parliament has voted to block the proposed merger between Austrian oil and gas firm OMV and the country's biggest utility group, Verbund. MP's refused to release the state's controlling stake in Verbund.

PowerPlus GT efficiency system launched
The UK's Power Generation Technology (PGT) has announced the development of PowerPlus, retrofit water overspray system for power station gas turbines that it claims can reduce emissions by 40 per cent.

Summer outlook improves for Ontario
The Independent Electricity System Operator reported an improved outlook for the Ontario, Canada overall reliability picture compared to last summer, due in part to more than 600 MW of additional new generation.

Massive power plan submitted to Russian government
Russia will spend almost R2tr ($74bn) on adding over 20 000 MW of new generation capacity and improving the transmission and distribution infrastructure over the next four years if plans submitted to the government are approved.

Brussels plans ITER launch
An international consortium comprising United States, Japan, China, Russia, India, South Korea and the European Union will today initial an agreement to construct an experimental nuclear fusion reactor marking the formal establishment of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER).

UK emphasises support for renewables
UK Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks reaffirmed the Government's commitment to renewable energy today during a keynote address to the All Energy conference in Aberdeen.

PPL joins FutureGen Industrial Alliance
The FutureGen Industrial Alliance announced that power generator PPL Corp. has joined them in working with the U.S. Department of Energy to site and develop FutureGen.
