Independent energy research group caution against UK nuclear viability
The UK government is widely expected to sanction a new generation of nuclear power stations this week. But energy experts at the University of Sussex Energy Group have concluded that the nuclear option will be rejected by the market in favour of other cheaper and more familiar options.

Suez ties up long-term power deals in Brazil
During energy auctions organized in Brazil on June 29th, Suez affiliate company Tractebel Energia managed to sell 493 MW of power for an amount of €6bn ($7.7bn), covering a term of 30 years starting in 2009.

Convicted Enron boss Kenneth Lay dies
The former chairman US energy group Enron has died of a suspected heart attack just weeks after he and former chief executive Jeffrey Skilling were found guilty in May in connection with Enron's collapse. He was pronounced dead in hospital in Aspen, Colorado in the early hours of Wednesday morning after suffering a heart attack.

Private group solicits bids for nuclear power in India
The London-based metals giant Vedanta Resources on Tuesday invited preliminary bids for setting up a 2400 MW nuclear power plant in India, despite the Indian government not having yet decided to allow private companies in the sector.

Iraq minister strikes power deal
Saudi Arabia has agreed to provide Iraq with a loan worth around $125m to upgrade the country's shattered power grid, Iraqi officials said Monday.

Suez plans investments to secure energy supplies in Chile
Suez Energy has presented plans to the Chilean Ministry of Mines and Energy for a $700m investment in the country aimed at securing the long-term energy supply in the north of Chile.
