U.S. breaks weekly demand record for electricity
U.S. demand for electricity reached an all-time record last week amid a national heat wave as U.S. utilities delivered 96,314 GWh of electricity for the week ending July 22, a more than 1 percent increase.

Acta toasts ethanol fuel cell advances
Italian-based fuel cell catalyst research and development firm Acta has entered into discussions with Sumitomo Corporation , its Asian distributor, to broaden and deepen the terms of their partnership. Acta said in an interim report that customers have tested cells with Acta's Hypermec catalyst and have proved Hypermec's unique performance capabilities.

Landfill gas-to-energy generators power Bay Area
Waste Management, out of Oakland, Calif., US, uses its landfills to generate enough clean energy to power 8,500 Bay Area homes.

GE to modify two 6B gas turbines for Chinese project
Under a new agreement with Chinese "green energy" company Eurofo International Group, GE Energy will modify the combustion and fuel systems of two Frame 6B gas turbines, enabling the machines to burn purified coke oven gas (COG) for power generation.

Power exports keep Iran at full output
High electricity Demand from neighbouring countries has kept Iran's power industry operating at full capacity from September to March, despite seasonal lower domestic demand, according to Energy Minister Parviz Fattah.

British Nuclear Group, the nuclear site management, decommissioning and clean-up specialist, has received formal consent from the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate to decommission Dungeness A power station once it ceases electrical generation at the end of 2006.
