AEP announces additional sites for environmental upgrades
American Electric Power (AEP) has identified five additional locations where it will invest in advanced equipment to continue improving the environmental performance of its coal-fired power plants. The projects are part of the company's previously announced plan to invest at least $3.7 billion in environmental retrofits through 2010.

The renewables subsidiary of Spanish firm Acciona Energía, EHN, has opened the largest wind farm in Catolonia, which generates at medium voltage.

Reliant Energy buys New Jersey's solar certificates
Reliant Energy has entered into a long-term agreement with PowerLight Corporation to purchase Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SRECs), in the largest SREC deal ever transacted under the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities' Clean Energy Programme.

Clean air and clear views for US National Parks
The views at America's national parks and wilderness areas gained further protection with the Clean Air Visibility Rule signed June 15 by EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson. Under the rule, states are required to identify older industrial facilities and power plants that affect visibility in specially protected areas.

Firms covered by the EU Emissions Trading Scheme will be able to open their UK carbon accounts later this week, the UK Government announced Tuesday. This Scheme is one of the main components in the fight against climate change.

Government allocates £1.35m for 14 new solar energy projects across the UK
UK Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks today announced that 14 new solar photovoltaic (PV) energy projects across the UK will receive £1.35m ($2.5m) in funding, bringing the total amount awarded to medium and large-scale projects since the Government established its scheme in 2002 to £18.8m.
