Vattenfall invests in remote electricity meters
Swedish utility Vattenfall is continuing its extensive programme on the introduction of remote electricity meters for the company's 900 000 customers in Sweden. Ahead of the second stage of this programme, a framework agreement has been signed with Iskraemeco on the complete supply and installation of 150 000 electricity meters including a data-collection system.

Endesa starts up the second gas turbine at its Tenerife CCGT plant
Spain's Endesa has started up the second of the three turbines at its new CCGT plant in Tenerife, located on the grounds of the Granadilla thermal power plant.

JBIC provides loan for thermal power plant in Bulgaria
The Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) has signed a loan agreement totaling 25.1bn yen (approximately $231m) with the Maritsa East II Thermal Power Plant Company in Bulgaria. The loan is being cofinanced with the Tokyo branch of ABN Amro Bank N.V.

Japan-US venture top bidder for Taweelah project
The Japanese-US alliance of Marubeni Corporation and BPU Ventures is the top bidder for Abu Dhabi's fifth independent water and power project (IWPP), the estimated $1bn Taweelah B/C project and a final selection is slated for the end of this summer.

Cadafe powers ahead in gas-fired generation
State-owned Venezuelan power company Cadafe plans to make the first down payment during the week of July 12 for German company Siemens to start construction of the $120m, 300 MW Pedro Camejo thermoelectric project, Cadafe's generation and transmission, according to a report by Business News Americas.

Areva upgrades NGT's UK Midlands power grid
Areva's Transmission and Distribution division has won a €20m ($24.7m) turnkey contract with National Grid Transco (NGT), the UK's largest transmission network owner and operator, to upgrade the electricity grid in central England.

Marubeni to upgrade Qatar's power transmission system
Marubeni Corporation has been awarded a 6.5 bn yen ($59.3m) contract to upgrade Qatar's power transmission system. The project is to be completed in 21 months.

Lewis Macdonald , Deputy Minister for Enterprise & Lifelong Learning, today officially opened ScottishPower's Cruach Mhor windfarm near Glendaruel in Argyll.
