Minnesota utility initiates surcharge due to failure of coal-fired plant
The recent breakdown of a coal-fired power plant in Cohasset, Minn., is hitting Minnesota Power's customers, both residential and industrial, square in the pocketbook.

EnBW rating slips
Standard & Poor's Ratings Services (S&P) has lowered its long-term corporate credit rating on Germany based energy utility Energie Baden Wuerttemberg AG (EnBW) to 'A-' from 'A'.

Nuclear energy may be considered for 2010 onwards
The Chilean nuclear energy commission CCEN said it would only consider nuclear power generation as a viable alternative from 2010 onwards, as the technology is evolving to a new generation of reactors more fitted to the size of the domestic market, that is, running a capacity of 300 - 380 MW.

Mirant reports 2003 results
Mirant today reported a $3.8bn net loss for 2003, or a net loss of $9.47 per diluted share compared to a net loss of $2.4bn, or a net loss of $6.06 per diluted share for 2002.

3M conductor for boosting power-line capacity begins tests
3M has expanded the field testing of its new high-capacity electricity transmission cable to include installations at the Western Area Power Administration's (WAPA) Liberty Substation near Phoenix, and at the Salt River Project's Santan Generating Station Expansion in the Phoenix suburb of Gilbert, AZ.

Bio fuelled CHP plant for Swedish utility
Marks Värme AB, a municipality-owned heat and power utility in Kinna about 60 km from Gothenburg, has chosen Wärtsilä Biopower Oy as the main supplier of a new biofuelled power plant. The utility's main function is to provide district heat. The new power plant will be taken into use at the beginning of 2005.

Calpine Power income fund announces asset
Calpine Power Income Fund has agreed to acquire a 120 MW natural gas-fired, combined-cycle cogeneration facility (the King City Facility) located in King City, California.

First electricity generated from Pelamis
Edinburgh-based Ocean Power Delivery (OPD) said that the first wave-generated electricity was produced on April 1 by its Pelamis prototype marine energy devise in sea trials in the North Sea.
