Special safety commendation for Powergen sites
Powergen has been awarded a special commendation by RoSPA for excellence in Health and Safety in the Electricity Industry across all its generation activities at the annual Occupational Health and Safety awards.

Union Fenosa granted CCGT approval
Spain's economy and finance ministry has approved a proposal by Union Fenosa to build an 800 MW gas-fired, combined-cycle plant at Arteixo near La Coruna in the northwest Galicia region, made up of two 400 MW units. Both units will be completed by the third quarter of 2006. Gas will be supplied via the Reganosa LNG import terminal currently under construction at nearby Mugardos. Union Fenosa said in its latest strategic plan it expected to have 2.4 GW of net domestic CCGT capacity by 2007.

New nuclear unit for Leningrad
Russia is to go ahead with the construction of a new 1500 MW nuclear reactor at the Leningrad nuclear power plant, according to Rosenergoatom's General Director Oleg Saraev. The new schedule calls for the design to be completed in 2007 and construction of the first unit to begin in 2012.

Norway and US sign MOU
The Norwegian ministry of petroleum and energy has signed a memorandum of understanding with the US regarding energy related research and technology. "The two countries share a common interest on energy related research and technology, which may be strengthened through focused and intensified bilateral effort in several R&D areas such as oil and gas exploitation, carbon sequestration, hydrogen research, as well as research on new renewable energy," the Norwegian ministry said in a statement.

AES Gener looks to coal
Coal-fired generation, long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) and regulatory change could help Chile emerge from its energy sector problems imposed by restrictions of Argentine natural gas, according to local power generator AES Gener. The company is studying a number of coastal sites for a new coal-fired project. There has not been a new coal plant in Chile's central grid (SIC) since AES Gener's 50 per cent-owned Guacolda plant started operations in 1995.

UK consults on energy efficiency
The UK Government's proposals for the next stage of the Energy Efficiency Commitment (EEC) have been launched in a consultation document.

Power market reform needed for Mexico
Mexico's electricity industry will need to be reforms to allow long-term contracts between private investors and state power company CFE said Mexico's energy secretary Felipe Calderón Hinojosa.

Vattenfall launches extensive study into tomorrow's electrical systems
Vattenfall will be investing SEK 20m ($2.6m) during the coming year into an extensive survey and pilot study of the conditions that tomorrow's electrical systems will be facing.
