DOE picks Southern Company, OUC to build clean coal technology plant
Southern Company of the US yesterday announced that the company has been selected by the US Department of Energy to build an advanced 285 MW coal gasification facility in central Florida as part of the energy department's Clean Coal Power Initiative.

EDF selects Flamanville site for new EPR nuclear facility
The board of Electricité de France (EDF) has agreed to build a forerunner European Pressurized Water Reactor (EPR ) nuclear reactor at Flamanville in Northern France. The decision was announced Thursday and, as required, will be referred to the National Public Debate Commission in the next few days.

Russia produces more electrical energy
In September Russia boosted the production of electrical energy by 0.7 per cent. Energy companies produced 68.6bn kilowatt-hour, according to data released by the Russian Federal Statistics Service.

UK jobs boost from windpower investment
A report commissioned by the UK Department of Trade and Industry and environmental group Greenpeace suggests that up to 76 000 new jobs could be created by the offshore wind industry.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has commissioned a network of intelligent energy meters to increase the country's energy reserves during periods of peak usage.

Shutdown minimised using Furmanite composite
Shutdown to repair four severely corroded condenser units at a Western Australia power station was kept to just 24 hours using composites repair technology from Furmanite. The Australian engineering company, which specialises in maximising asset uptime, claim to have created substantial savings.

Kema projects slower growth in US competitive power market
In its recently published Retail Outlook report, energy consultant Kema, Inc. projects that the US competitive retail power market will grow at an annual rate of 8 per cent through 2009, from approximately 300 TWh at the end of 2003 to approximately 475 TWh by the end of 2009.

Origin planned plant to use new gas source
Origin energy, one of Australia's largest electricity retailers, today announced plans for a $A1bn ($723m) gas fired power station. The plant, to be built in Warrnambool in western Victoria, would be supplied with recently discovered gas from the Otway basin off Victoria's south west coast via a 78 km underground pipeline.

US nuclear regulator promotes Westinghouse design for Chinese market
The top US nuclear regulator vouched for the safety of a new Westinghouse nuclear reactor - yet to be built anywhere in the world - in a sales pitch to supply China's growing power industry.

Endesa plans €1.1bn investment in Spanish power distribution this year
Spanish utility Endesa is to increase its investment in the country's distribution system - some 40 per cent more in 2004 than the rest of the Spanish utilities did last year as a whole.
