Endesa acquires interconnection capacity between France and Italy
Endesa has acquired 88 per cent of the interconnection capacity between France and Italy that was put up for auction by the French electricity system operator (RTE).

Belarus and Libya to create a joint energy company
Belarus and Libya have produced a document on the establishment of a joint Belarusian-Libyan energy company. The proposal was the result of talks at the second session of the Belarus and Libya joint commission for economic, trade, scientific and technical cooperation.

New chairman for GCC grid authority
Saudi Arabia's undersecretary for electricity affairs at the Water & Electricity Ministry, Salih bin Hussain Alawaji, has been elected chairman of the board of directors of the Dammam-based GCC Interconnection Authority (GCCIA)

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov has commissioned Industry and Energy Minister Viktor Khristenko and RAO UES CEO Anatoly Chubais to prepare an analysis of risks connected with electrical energy reforms in the first quarter of 2005.

Enel prepare purchase of EDF stake by selling water assets
Enel SpA is ready to buy a five per cent stake in Electricité de France (EDF) as soon as the French government privatizes the company. The report comes a day after Enel announced they are to sell €36m of water assets.

China to reach 440 GW by year end
The China Association of Electric Power Enterprises has forecast that installed capacity in the country will rise from 384.5 GW to reach 440 GW by the end of 2004.

Electro Energy get 2005 funding for battery research
Electro Energy Inc., a developer and manufacturer of advanced rechargeable batteries, is to receive $2m from the US Department of Energy for the continued development of bipolar nickel- metal hydride batteries for energy storage applications.

YNN Pacific secures 600 MW Philippine power plant
The Philippines Department of Finance will today confirm the sale to YNN Pacific Consortium, Inc. of the 600 MW Masinloc power plant for $561m.

Saudi Arabia counts cost of agreeing to Kyoto protocol
Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest oil exporter, has approved the Kyoto protocol on climate change, the official Saudi press agency reported. The cabinet took the decision and a "royal decree has been prepared to this effect," the agency said.

On-site hydrogen generation to cool St. Clair
Plug Power Inc. is to provide on-site hydrogen generation to Michigan's Saint Clair power plant in order to cool six generator units at Detroit Edison's facility.
