EA hopeful on EU reaching Kyoto targets
In its latest report on greenhouse gas emissions trends, the European Environment Agency (EFA) remains surprisingly optimistic about the chances of the EU reaching its 8 per cent reduction target, even though real 2002 figures published in July only indicate an achieved 2.9 per cent reduction below base-year level.

US greenhouse gas emissions continue moderate growth
US greenhouse gas emissions increased by 0.7 per cent in 2003, from 6891 million metric tons carbon dioxide equivalent (MMTCO2e) in 2002 to 6,936 MMTCO2e in 2003, according to "Emissions of Greenhouse Gases in the United States 2003", a report released today by the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

India to embrace bio-diesel for power generation
The Indian government has said that it plans to ask captive power producers to use non-edible bio-diesel for generating electricity, in an effort to reduce the country's dependence on fossil oils.

Duke Power to voluntarily install emission controls
Duke Power has voluntarily agreed with the South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control to install additional nitrogen oxide emission controls on its coal fired Lee steam station.

South Korea will choose a site for nuclear waste storage in the first half of 2005, a government source said Friday.

UK consults on meeting climate change goals
The UK Government announced today that it is well on course to meet its Kyoto emissions reduction target, but more needs to be done to achieve its national goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 20 per cent below 1990 levels by 2010. It is planning a period of consultation on areas where it believes there are opportunities to further reduce carbon emissions.

UK government proposes review of Renewables Obligation
UK Energy Minister, Mike O'Brien, published Thursday the Government's plans for the review of the Renewables Obligation (RO). The Renewables Obligation ensures all electricity suppliers produce a specified and increasing amount of energy from renewable sources.

Greenpeace slams IEA stance on fossil fuels
Environmental pressure group Greenpeace yesterday criticized the International Energy Agency (IEA) for failing to properly assess the world's energy trends for the next decades in its report "World Energy Outlook 2004".

UK to amend EU emissions allowance
The UK government today announced that it is to seek an increased emissions trading allowance, the proposal comes after an increase from original projections.

Carbon credit compliance service launched
SmartestEnergy has announced a new carbon credit compliance service for those to be affected by the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). The UK consolidator for the independent generation market is aiming the service toward generators and users of power who will shortly be informed of their carbon dioxide (C02) allowance through the UK's National Allocation Plan (NAP).
