Abu Dhabi to consider privatization of T & D assets in 2005
The privatisation of Abu Dhabi's power transmission and distribution sector will be finalised by the first quarter of 2005, according to a top official.

EGAT privatization back on Thai agenda
Thailand has revived its plan to privatize the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat). Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra announced the establishment of a ten-member committee chaired by Boonchoo Direksathapon, the managing director of Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding Plc to seek the most suitable privatisation model for Egat.

Indonesia to enact power law soon
The Indonesian government will shortly implement a new law designed to attract investment into its electricity sector, an official said yesterday.

Despite the considerable anecdotal evidence suggesting that energy competition has been bad for residential customers in the UK, Datamonitor's Daniel Legg argues that an analysis of the benefits of market liberalization needs to look beyond residential retail prices. New bids required for Slovenske Elektrarne
Three international energy groups CEZ of the Czech Republic, Enel of Italy, and RAO United Energy System of Russia will have to resubmit binding bids for a two-thirds stake in dominant Slovak electricity generator Slovenske Elektrarne by September 3.

Italy's Marzano Decree enacted
The Marzano decree for the reorganisation of the Italian energy sector became law on 1 August 2004. This means that as from 1 July 2005 all commercial electricity customers can freely choose their electricity supplier, and households from 1 July 2007.

Oman enacts power & water privatization law
Oman's government has moved forward with its plan to privatise the electricity and water industries in the gulf country by passing a sector law under an all-embracing umbrella privatisation law passed earlier in the week.

Czech CEZ eyes power Bulgarian power plants
The Bulgarian privatisation agency plans to sell several electricity utilities, as well as hydro power stations Bobov Dol, Rousse and Varna. Czech power company CEZ has reportedly expressed interest in acquiring electricity utilities in Bulgaria.

EU provides technical assistance to Jordanian electricity sector
The Electricity Regulatory Commission (ERC) and multinational consultant Atos Origin, formerly SchlumbergerSema, in consortium with Nexant Inc. and local partner Talal Abu Ghazaleh Organisation on Tuesday signed a €3.7m ($4.5m) technical assistance contract in the framework of an EU-funded programme to support Jordan's regulatory reform and liberalisation drive.

EVN plans first step in competitive power market
An important step in the creation of a competitive electricity market in Vietnam will take place on 1 July when Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) launch an internal market in which its electricity generators must compete with the parent company to sell their products.
