First turbines begin service at 2160 MW Caruachi plant in Venezuela
The Caruachi Hydroelectric Project under construction in southeastern Venezuela has reached two milestones, as the first two GE Hydro turbine-generators installed at the site have entered commercial service. Unit one began service on schedule and unit two came on line a month ahead of the contract completion date.

ABB helps strengthen power supply in Alaska
The world's largest battery energy storage system, which uses ABB technology, has begun commercial operation in Alaska. The $30m system is expected to cut power blackouts by more than 60 per cent.

Wärtsilä wins power plant orders in excess of €200m
Wärtsilä has won power plant orders for over €200m ($217m) in July and August. Wärtsilä's largest ever power plant, with an output of over 250 MW, will be delivered to Honduras.

New 'bladeless' turbine to be built for state of Hawaii
International Automated Systems Inc. (IAS) said it has signed an agreement with The Hydrogen Renewable Energy Enterprise, LLC (THREE) to build a "bladeless" Propulsion Turbine as a demonstration unit for the state of Hawaii.

Marathon subsidiary, Pertamina and Exspan sign deal for long-term LNG supply
A subsidiary of Marathon Oil Corp. has signed an agreement for liquefied natural gas supplies with Pertamina and P.T. Exspan Tomori Sulawesi. The LNG would supply the proposed Tijuana Regional Energy Center in Baja California.

VA Tech Hydro modernizes Brokke power plant
Austria's VA Tech, a suppliers of equipment and services for hydroelectric power plants, was awarded a contract for the renovation of a Francis turbine by the Norwegian power plant operator Agder Energi Tjenester AS Kristiansand.

Black & Veatch awarded contract by Saudi Arabia-based national contracting company
Black & Veatch announced that it has been selected by National Contracting Company (NCC), a power plant construction company based in Saudi Arabia, to provide engineering services and project management for Saudi Electricity Company's Power Plant 3 (PP3) expansion project, located in Jeddah.

Rentech announces progress on Australian gas-to-liquids project utilizing coal
Rentech Inc. announced that the Latrobe Valley in eastern Victoria, Australia has emerged as the leading choice for what could be the first "clean" production of gas and sulfur-free diesel and naphtha in Australia from the processing of coal.

GE's 9FB gas turbine technology selected for Iberdrola projects
GE Power Systems has received contracts from Spanish energy producer Iberdrola Generacion S.A. of Madrid to provide gas turbine combined-cycle systems for two power projects in Spain that will add more than 1600 MW to the country's electricity grid.

Alstom signs O & M contract in Brazil
Alstom has been awarded an operation support and maintenance contract for the Fortaleza combined cycle power plant in Brazil. The contract, worth approximately €40m ($43.2m), was placed by Central Geradora Termelétrica Fortaleza S.A, a special-purpose company established by Endesa Internacional S.A., an affiliate of the Endesa Group of Spain.
