Task force concludes Aug. 14 blackout was preventable
The joint U.S.-Canada Task Force has released its report on the massive blackouts that happened Aug. 14 in the Northeastern U.S. and Canada. Among other things, the report concluded that the outage was preventable and that the initial events which started the cascading blackout occurred in Ohio.

Verbund introduces electricity trading software
Austrian electricity company Verbund and team4e, have developed a new software package for electricity trading. The prototype of the CMS P2P (electronic confirmation matching system - peer to peer) is called Enerbility.

Elsam purchases British offshore wind farm project
Danish power utility Elsam has entered into an agreement with NEG Micon to purchase an offshore wind farm project at Kentish Flats at the mouth of the Thames in the North Sea. Elsam said that it is paying well over one billion Danish Kroner ($160.4m) and is subject to the approval of British authorities.

Del Williamson to retire from GE
Del Williamson, president of Global Sales for GE Power Systems, a 45-year GE veteran and a widely known figure in the world power generation industry, has announced his retirement, effective Feb. 1, 2004.

EPSA comments on joint blackout report
EPSA applauds the thorough and objective approach the U.S. - Canada Power System Outage Task Force adopted in its review of the circumstances surrounding the August 14, 2003, blackout.
