Blackout won't affect New York's utility credit
Standard & Poor's Ratings Services noted that it does not expect the recent power outage that affected New York State to adversely affect the credit quality of New York utilities Consolidated Edison Inc. (A/Stable/A-1), Energy East Corp. (BBB+/Negative/--), Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. (A/Stable/--) and Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. (A/Stable/--).

When Congress returns after Labor Day, lawmakers will take up pending energy legislation that already contains five key provisions needed to bolster U.S. electric transmission capacity and help ensure power system reliability, EEI President Thomas Kuhn declared recently.

R.J. Rudden Associates Inc. said a big gap in infrastructure investment may have contributed to the Aug. 14 blackouts that cut power to more than 50 million in the Northeast U.S. and Canada.
