State of Vermont mulling purchase of hydroelectric facilities
The State of Vermont has retained an economic consulting firm to examine a possible purchase of hydroelectric facilities on the Connecticut and Deerfield rivers.

DTI launches investigation into London power cuts
Stephen Timms, UK Energy Minister, announced today that the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) will launch an investigation into the power cuts that affected large areas of south London and parts of Kent on 28 August, and the West Midlands on 5 September.

Pakistan's National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has granted generation licences to twelve IPPs presently operating in the country.

UK Government questions National Grid over power failures
The UK government is putting pressure on transmission company National Grid Transco after a second major grid failure occurred in the UK. The blackout, this time in the Birmingham area of England on Friday, followed the major outage, which brought London to a standstill last month.

The Energy Information Administration has released its August report on the generation and consumption of fuels for electricity.

ASCE infrastructure report card: America gets D+
The condition of U.S. roads, bridges, drinking water systems and other public works have shown little improvement since they were graded an overall D+ in 2001, the ASCE said.

Pepco, FERC seek federal court intervention in Mirant case
Pepco, a unit of Pepco Holdings, Inc., and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Friday sought relief from a federal district court in Texas to block an effort by bankrupt Mirant Corp. to bar FERC from requiring Mirant to honor its power contracts with Pepco.

EEI: Adequate infrastructure, mandatory rules key to reliability
Outlining its views on how to bolster U.S. electric reliability, the Edison Electric Institute urged Congress to enact comprehensive national energy legislation containing mandatory reliability rules and provisions that will help stimulate the development of a more robust U.S. transmission grid.

ISO New England makes policy recommendations before Congress to address national electricity system deficiencies
Officials from ISO New England, the operator of the region's bulk power system and wholesale power markets, called for regional control over transmission systems and national reliability standards to protect against future widespread blackouts.

Midwest ISO provides details to Congress regarding grid
The top executive for the Midwest Independent Transmission Operator, Inc., testified before a Congressional committee Thursday about the grid manager's role as Reliability Coordinator for much of the Midwest U.S. during last month's widespread power outages.
