Eastern China to have competitive power pricing in 2004
Power generators in eastern China will be permitted to sell their power through competitive bidding from April next year, according to reports from the China Daily. The decision marks a further step in the reform of the power sector which has begun.

Dalkia and Stadtwerke Leipzig file updated bids for Poznan heat and power plant
French utility Dalkia Termika with its Poznan-based power firm PEC and Germany's Stadtwerke Leipzig have each filed updated binding offers in the privatization of the ZEP, the Poznan heat and power plant, the Treasury said Tuesday.

Exelon Generation selects ESG for retail market services
Exelon Generation Co., LLC recently entered into an agreement with Massachusetts-based Energy Services Group, Inc. (ESG) for retail power marketplace transaction and trading partner management services in Texas, which will be utilized for its Texas retail subsidiary, ExTex Retail Services Company, LLC.

Mid-Atlantic utility commissioners urge Congress to improve wholesale power markets
State utility commissioners from Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania recently issued a statement calling on Congress to pass federal energy legislation that improves wholesale power markets -- without delay.

Energy merchant sector is 'under repair,' analyst report states
In his latest report "Industry Survey on Natural Gas," Standard & Poor's natural gas and multi-utility equity analyst Craig Shere is forecasting increasingly favorable interest from creditors and investors for energy merchants as pending regulatory issues continue to be resolved, banks and institutional lenders continue to refinance merchant debt obligations and pending asset sales are consummated.

FERC orders NRG Power Marketing to keep supplying power while it reviews dispute
FERC has recently denied NRG Power Marketing, Inc.'s request to cancel a wholesale power contract it had with Connecticut Light and Power Co. (CL&P), at least until the commission has a chance to look at the dispute in more detail.

Italian parliament committee approves energy market reforms
Legislation to bring in a new energy law in Italy, which would bring about full liberalization of country's gas and power markets was passed Wednesday by a key committee of Italy's Chamber of Deputies. The legislation was approved by the Productive Activity Committee, a parliamentary spokesman said.

Calpine Corp. announced that it has signed a two-year agreement to provide up to 300 megawatts of power to Brazos Electric Power Cooperative, Inc. (Brazos Electric).
