Foster Wheeler awarded contract for gas turbine power plant project
Foster Wheeler USA Corp. has been awarded a $28 million contract by Bayswater Peaking Facility, LLC for a 54 MW natural gas-fired power-generation plant in New York.

Powder River Basin low-sulfur coal production will continue substantial growth in 2002
Production of Powder River Basin coal increased substantially in 2001 and will grow further this year, as price increases justify expansion projects.

Islander East natural gas pipeline project receives preliminary regulatory approval
Islander East Pipeline Co. received a positive preliminary determination from FERC to construct, own and operate about 50 miles of interstate natural gas pipeline in Connecticut and on Long Island, N.Y.

NREL awarded Xcel Energy contracts for renewable research
DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory has been selected to perform three research projects, worth $2.8 million, as part of a program to advance renewable energy that is funded by Xcel Energy.

Emergency peaker plant permitting project ends in California
With electricity prices falling and money tight, the last peaking power project pending under an emergency program to get electric generating capacity up and running quickly in California was withdrawn from consideration. Pegasus Power Project was a 180 Mw expansion of an existing plant at a prison in San Bernardino County. The application was withdrawn Jan. 3. (Ann de Rouffignac)

PPL slashes earnings forecast and cancels power projects
Allentown, Pa.-based PPL Corp. Friday cut its earnings forecast for 2001 and 2002 and warned earnings could even be worse than estimated because of a write-down on an investment in a UK utility. PPL also said it will cancel about 2,100 Mw of planned development valued at $1.3 billion.

LIPA staff recommends 4,000 MW purchase from Keyspan
The Long Island Power Authority staff recommended LIPA exercise an option to buy 4,000 MW of generating capacity from Keyspan Corp. The LIPA board is expected to conduct public hearings on whether to buy the KeySpan generation in January and make a decision in February.

Top New York utility regulator urges more redundancy after Sept. 11 'watershed'
Permanent repair of New York City electric and natural gas services disrupted by terrorist attacks could take months, according to the chairman of the New York Public Service Commission. Maureen Helmer said Sept. 11 represented a watershed date in the way regulators and the utility industry view security.

Williams Energy Partners buys NGL pipeline from Aux Sable Liquid Products
Williams Energy Partners L.P. has purchased a natural gas liquids pipeline from Aux Sable Liquid Products L.P. for $8.9 million.
