Condition ripe for new El Niño weather pattern, NWS says
The National Weather Service said a new El Niño phenomenon could be in place by spring with the effects being felt by fall in the US. The most recent El Niño took place in 1997-1998 and was extremely severe, including its effect on energy markets.

S&P's 2002 electricity outlook weak; stronger for oil and gas producers
Standard & Poor's Monday reported a negative near-term outlook for electric companies and the natural gas industry, even though the ratings agency expects earnings to increase modestly in 2002. S&P suggested investors will switch from the utility sector in the search for better returns. But the energy sector may offer investors 'some upward surprises,' S&P said.

Survey concludes good security at nuclear plants
A recent survey done by the Nuclear Energy Institute concludes that private security personnel currently employed at commercial nuclear sites are highly prepared to carry out their protective responsibilities.

Missing nuclear rod report to be assessed by NRC
The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Tuesday said it will release its evaluation of an investigation into the loss of two spent fuel rods at the Millstone Unit 1 nuclear power plant in Waterford, Conn. The results will be presented at an open meeting Jan. 15.

SCE plays down reports of terrorist threat to California nuclear plant
A 43-year-old former employee of Southern California Edison, who was terminated last month from the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, has been arrested after allegedly making threatening comments against employees of the plant. But SCE said it is unaware of any evidence indicating that he made so-called 'terrorist' threats against the plant itself as some media have reported.

EIA projecting electricity demand to be up 'slightly' this year
After no growth last year, the US government is projecting electricity demand will revive 'slightly' this year as the economy improves. The US Energy Information Administration predicted electricity demand will be up 0.8% in 2002 and 2.4% in 2003.

Municipal gas group asks US EIA for integrated gas reporting
The American Public Gas Association Monday asked the US Energy Information Administration to integrate gas storage data with other natural gas statistics to prevent unwarranted price volatility. EIA plans to begin reporting natural gas storage data on a weekly instead of monthly basis beginning in May 2002.

U.S. natural gas prices climb 12.6% in January
Average U.S. monthly natural gas spot prices for January rose 12.6 % from December, to $2.51/MMBtu — yet are 74.6% below the $9.88/MMBtu average reached in January 2001, according to new data released today.
