California electricity air pollution fell, despite fear of summer rise
Fears that air pollution from oil and gas-fired electric generation would surge in California this past summer never materialized, state officials said. Nitrogen oxide emissions actually declined 24% between June and August 2001, compared to the same period in 2000, according to findings of the California Air Resources Board.

Energy secretary recommends Yucca Mountain to president for nuclear waste storage
Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham has made his recommendation to President Bush that the Yucca Mountain site in Nevada should be used as a permanent storage site for the country's nuclear waste, the Associated Press reported Thursday. (Sylvie Dale)

State of New York sues two power companies over air pollution
Officials from the state of New York have filed a federal lawsuit against two major power companies, accusing them of violations of the Clean Air Act at a couple of coal-burning generating facilities.

Northeast states, gas producers unhappy with expected revisit of air rules
Nine Northeast states Tuesday warned the White House it will sue the US Environmental Protection Agency if it moves forward with an expected plan to revise air pollution standards for power plants and refiners. Some gas producers are also said to be unhappy with the proposal because it could encourage utilities to expand coal-fired plants, which burn less expensive coal, instead of building gas-powered ones.

Peabody Energy has received pre-approval for the air quality permit from the Commonwealth of Kentucky regarding a proposed coal-based electricity generation project.

OMB wants EPA to revisit NSR for power plants and refineries
The White House Office of Management and Budget wants to review and possibly rescind rules that govern how power plants and refiners monitor stationary source pollution. Congress required OMB to issue a report on the costs and benefits of federal regulations.
