Senate committee passes climate change bill

5 November 2009-- The U.S. Senate's Environment and Public Works Committee approved a version of the climate change bill November 5, but it is still unlikely a law will be passed before the December 7 global warming summit in Copenhagen.

Republicans have boycotted the bill saying more analysis needs to be done and one Democrat voted against its passage.

The bill is now one of several Senate initiatives that would require 20 percent cuts in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.
