09 July 2009-- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid gives committees an extra 10 days to work on the climate change and energy bill.
Reid originally wanted the Environment and Public Works Committee to have their work done by Sept. 18, but he said the size of the legislation and the task of getting the necessary 60 votes to pass it pushed him to extend the deadline to Sept. 28.
Republicans are expected to put up a fight against the climate bill, especially over certain measures that are in the House version that was passed in June.
Agriculture Chairman Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) said he will hold a July 22 hearing on global warming legislation.
Senate leaders said they want to get the bill passed before December's United Nations climate negotiations in Copenhagen, Denmark.
