18 September 2008 - Transmission system operators Energinet.dk in Denmark and TenneT in the Netherlands are to investigate the opportunity of establishing a power link between the two countries, writes the Danish Energy Association in its daily newsletter.
The aim of the link, preliminarily called COBRA, is to be able to integrate more renewable energy into both the Danish and Dutch power systems as well as to increase supply security. The link will also help increase competition on the western European power markets.
Development director of Energinet.dk, Peter Jørgensen, comments: "Strong power links between the European countries make it possible to integrate significantly more wind energy in Europe. In the next four years, we must integrate 40% more wind energy in Denmark, and the Netherlands also has major expansion plans for their wind energy.
"A link between Denmark and the Netherlands will thus be a great benefit for both countries, since we can export power to the Netherlands when we have excess wind energy, and import from the Netherlands when the wind drops in Denmark."
A power link between Denmark and the Netherlands is in agreement with EU ambitions of making a stronger and more interconnected power grid in Europe, and will contribute to developing a more international and sustainable energy market, which is a key priority in European energy policy.
Energinet.dk and TenneT will make technical and economic investigations over the next months. During the first six months of 2009, the operators expect to have a business case ready, which will identify economic benefits of the power link, its capacity, the size of the investment required and when it can be commissioned.
