IHI to supply large gas turbines to Rio Tinto

12 August 2008 - IHI Corporation has landed an order from Australian mining giant Rio Tinto group to supply four 40 MW gas turbines.

The deal is valued at about 20bn ($182m) yen, the major Japanese heavy equipment maker said.

IHI plans to start construction of the power generation facilities next February for completion in May 2010.

Power from the LM6000 power generators, which have the largest output among IHI-made gas turbines, will be used in an iron ore mine in the western Australian region of Pilbara as well as in the port areas of Dampier and Cape Lambert, according to IHI.

Before the latest deal, IHI had already supplied three of the same turbines to the Rio Tinto group. The Japanese firm plans to step up its promotion of sales of the turbine in Australia, company officials said.
