11 July 2008 - Malaysia's international trade and industry minister, Muhyiddin Yassin, invited Japanese investors to invest in the development of the solar energy industry in Malaysia to meet the increasing global demand for renewable energy.
"Malaysia's climate is conducive for generating solar energy," he told around 650 businessmen at a seminar on "Business Opportunities in Malaysia", part of a six-day trade and investment mission to Japan.
The seminar was jointly organized by Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (MIDA) and Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade).
"Malaysia has the infrastructure and the necessary support facilities to attract investments in solar photovoltaic manufacturing projects," Muhyiddin said.
According to him, Japanese investors should take the opportunity as Malaysia is developing the solar cluster, while Japan is already in the forefront in the solar industry, with global business interests.
He was reported as saying that the world's major manufacturers such as First Solar, Q-Cells and Sun Power have already indicated their interest to set up production plants in Malaysia.
