7 July 2008 - According to a report in the Yomiuri Shimbun, the G8 leaders, who are meeting in northern Japan this week, will push for more nuclear power generation as a way to curb greenhouse gas emissions.
The newspaper, quoting anonymous sources, said that G8 nations will pressure China and India to satisfy a greater percentage of their electricity needs from nuclear power plants as a way to both reduce global warming and help battle the high price of oil.
The additional nuclear capabilities would, however, come with strings attached. They would have to be accompanied by guarantees on the non-proliferation of nuclear technology, the safety of the nuclear facilities and regional security.
