4 July 2008 - UK and France power network operators National Grid PLC and RTE said they will invest €70m ($110m) into the electricity interconnector between the two countries.
The work will boost the reliability of the existing interconnector and in the long term maintain its ability to keep pace with developments in the European power market, the companies said.
The first period of work will be in April-May 2010 and the second period in April-May 2011. During these periods the link will only be at 50 per cent of its 1000 MW capacity. National Grid and RTE said they would make every effort to limit the effect this will have on the market.
French engineering firm Areva is responsible for the work. The interconnector is approximately 70km in length, with 45 km of subsea cable. Average availability has been at 94 per cent or more a year, the statement said.
