EDF launches 300 000 smart meters pilot project

3 July 2008 - ERDF, a subsidiary of EDF and the largest electricity distribution network in the European Union, has launched a major transformation programme that will see the replacement of 35 million electricity meters in France, beginning with a pilot trial of 300 000 meters.

To help ensure the success of this huge project, ERDF has selected Atos Origin as the architect for the information system and lead manager of the consortium of technology firms that will conduct the pilot phase.

New "smart meters" are able to transmit and receive data for remote reading and optimized network management. Installing millions of these new meters is in itself a massive undertaking that will also generate huge volumes of data to be transmitted, stored and processed. The information system to manage this remote metering data constitutes the core of the Automated Meter Management (AMM) system.

"We're extremely pleased that ERDF has chosen us as both overall integrator for the pilot phase of the project and to build the central information system for this truly extraordinary program," said Philippe Germond, Chief Executive Officer of Atos Origin.

Atos Origin has an impressive track record in managing and upgrading highly critical real-time systems over several decades of service. Atos Origin's partnership with EDF since 1978 for France's nuclear power programme is emblematic of this approach. The new AMM project is intended to serve as a catalyst for innovation and drive the transformation to the future smart grid model.

Specifications call for the AMM system to deliver data transmission and processing performance equivalent to that of a nuclear power plant control room. Thanks to its experience in applications for the nuclear industry, Atos Origin has crafted a robust architecture that meets these exacting availability and reliability requirements.
