Alstom to build first GT26-based combined-cycle power plant in Tunisia

1 July 2008 - Alstom has been awarded a turnkey contract, worth approximately €335m ($528m) million, by Société Tunisienne de l'Electricité et du Gaz (STEG) for the construction of a 400 MW combined-cycle power plant. The power plant will be constructed at Ghannouch, in the Gabes region, in southern Tunisia. An additional contract includes a 12-year operation support and maintenance agreement.

Under the terms of the contract, Alstom will supply a fully integrated turnkey power plant, composed of one KA26 combined-cycle unit, integrating in-house core plant components: one GT26 gas turbine, one heat recovery steam generator, one steam turbine, one TOPGAS turbogenerator and the ALSPA distributed control system.

Ghannouch will be the third power plant constructed by Alstom for STEG in Tunisia, after the combined-cycle power plants of Sousse and Rades, which went online in 1994 and 2001 respectively.

The demand for power in Tunisia is rising by 6 per cent annually, as a result of Tunisia's rapid economic development. The new facility will be constructed on the site of the old thermal power plant of Ghannouch thus allowing the use of existing commodities such as the sea water intake and discharge structures. It is expected to meet a major part of the electricity demand in the southern part of the country and maintain the equilibrium of the electric power production between the regions.

"This agreement attests to Alstom's close and longstanding collaboration with Société Tunisienne de l'Electricité et du Gaz" said Philippe Joubert, Alstom's Executive Vice-President and President, Power Systems Sector. "We are honored that STEG has chosen Alstom to provide this power plant for Tunisia, enabling Alstom, through its expertise in turnkey projects and environmentally-friendly technology, to secure power supply to the region and support the country's rapidly developing electricity market."

To date, Alstom has sold 118 GT24/GT26 gas turbines and the fleet has accumulated over 2.7 million firing hours. With operations in 70 countries, Alstom brings international expertise and extensive knowledge of local markets as a fully integrated provider of clean, efficient and technologically advanced power generation solutions in all key energy markets.
