30 June 2008 India's Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde says his Government plans to give a major thrust to hydropower projects in the country and has offered attractive terms for companies producing hydropower.
Speaking Friday he said a company setting up a hydropower project would be allowed to sell 40 per cent of electricity produced at the plant on their own.
According to the Minister, at present, there is a peak- hour power shortage of 30 GW in the country. However, the hydropower potential is huge as the Himalyan region alone has the generation capacity of 150 GW. The Government has come out with an attractive package for project-affected people at the new power plants, he said.
Of the total power capacity of 78 755 MW to be built in the current plan period, equipment for 75 000 MW has already been ordered. Shinde said the government has not made any changes in the power plant target in the current five-year plan.
Referring to Sasan power project in Madhya Pradesh, he said it was running behind schedule but according to the communication received yesterday, it is expected that one of its two units could start production in this plan period.
