ABB wins $233m order from Korea's Hyundai for Qatar power plant

Swiss engineering group ABB has won a $233m contract from South Korea's Hyundai Engineering and Construction to supply power systems and grid connections for a natural gas and steam turbine power plant to be built in Qatar.

The $3.7bn plant, which will be built in Qatar, will be the largest power generation and water desalination project in the country and will have the capacity to generate 2730 MW of power per day, ABB said in a statement.

The plant is expected to begin operations in 2010 and be fully operational by 2011.

A consortium comprising Suez Energy International/Mitsui, Qatar Electricity Water Corporation and Qatar Petroleum will develop the plant.
