19 June 2008 - The president of Brazil's state-owned Electronuclear enterprise has said that four more nuclear power plants will be built in Brazil.
At a seminar on nuclear power held in Rio de Janeiro, Othon Pinheiro da Silva said two of the new plants will be constructed in the northeast of the country, one in the southeast while the fourth's location has yet to be decided.
The details of the projects would be discussed next year, he added.
The four new plants are designed to have a minimum combined generating capacity of 6000 MW, accounting for about 70 per cent of the nation's nuclear power, and is thus fundamental to guaranteeing the supply of electricity in Brazil in the next two decades, Silva said.
Currently, the joint generating capacity of Brazil's two operating power plants, Angra I and Angra II, is 2000 MW. Angra III, which will be constructed in the next half of this year, is expected to have a capacity of 1350 MW.
