13 June 2008 -- Seminole Electric Cooperative said it received approval from Florida's Fifth District Court of Appeal to build a 750 MW clean coal generating plant in Florida.
In a unanimous decision, the Court asked the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) to grant a permit for Unit 3 to be built at the Seminole Generating Station in Florida.
The cooperative provides wholesale energy for 10 electric distribution co-ops. The station's two 650 MW units are currently being upgraded with similar control technologies.
The 750 MW project had been sidelined since August 2007 when the FDEP denied its required site certification. This is said to have resulted in a delay of at least two years.
Unit 3 received a needed certification from the Florida Public Service Commission in July 2006. It originally was planned to go into service in May 2012. The cooperative says it is currently updating plans for the unit to come online.
