05 June 2008 -- Vestas said it chose Houston, Texas as the location for its new wind power research center.

Vestas announced the location for the center at the WINDPOWER 2008 Conference and Exhibition in Houston. The company first announced plans to build a research center in the U.S. in November 2007.

The focus of the Houston-based center is said to be consolidation and R&D. Research at the center is said to focus on mechanics, electricity, control systems, advanced materials and aerodynamics. Vestas says it will focus specifically on turbine efficiency.

Additionally, Vestas says it will conduct research through external partnerships. The company says it already has research partnerships with universities in Texas.

The research center in Houston is scheduled to open in 2009 and to be fully operational in 2010.
