SUEZ Energy makes gas-fired acquisition

SUEZ Energy North America (SENA) said it bought a 30.45 percent equity interest in the 575 MW Astoria Energy Power Plant from SCS Energy. Purchase price was not disclosed.

Primarily fueled by natural gas, the facility began operating in 2006 and is located within the New York Independent System Operator's (NYISO) market.

Most of Astoria Energy's energy and capacity is being bought by ConEdison under a power purchase agreement. A second phase for a 500 MW unit is said to be in advanced development.

SUEZ Energy Astoria, a unit of SENA, will be the plant's operator and asset manager.

This acquisition marks SENA's entry into the Zone J market and reflects SENA's focus on four core electricity market regions–New England, New York, PJM and ERCOT. All four regional markets are deregulated wholesale electricity markets.
