Duke Energy buys 16 MW of solar

21 May 2008 -- Duke Energy Carolinas said it will buy the entire electricity output of a 16 MW photovoltaic solar farm scheduled to be built just north of Charlotte, N.C.

Under agreements signed with SunEdison, Duke Energy Carolinas will purchase power from what has been called the nation's largest photovoltaic solar farm beginning no later than Dec. 31, 2010. The agreements run for 20 years.

The decision came after Duke Energy issued an RFP for renewable resources in April 2007. Duke Energy also said it is planning its own distributed solar generation program. The program must still receive approval from the North Carolina Utilities Commission.
